Dorothy M. Schumann

Dorothy Helen (Mueller) Schumann, 90, longtime Midland resident, died on Friday, January 1st in Odessa. Dorothy was born to Bernard and Mary Helena (Smith) Kennedy in El Paso, Texas on May 29, 1925. She graduated from Loretto Academy in El Paso, and earned a bachelor's degree in Spanish from what was then Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy, later UTEP, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta.

She married Joseph Francis Mueller on June 6, 1949, and they were married almost fifteen years. They moved to Midland in 1951. After Joe's death in 1964, she raised their five children to adulthood. She was enthusiastically involved in their various interests and activities, including serving as a room mom, Cub Scout den mother, and taking her kids and their cousins on multiple camping trips.

In late 2000, she surprised and delighted her grown children with the news that she and Max Schumann were engaged! They married on December 30 of that year, and were married until he died in 2012.

Dorothy loved and served God all her life through her family and through His church. She endeavored to make Him known to others. She was active at St. Ann's parish in the Mother's Club and Altar Society. She taught and coordinated the CCD program and Baptism preparation classes for parents. She also served on the parish council. She was an active member of the Third Order Lay Carmelite group in Midland, and was instrumental in helping bring Catholic radio to the Midland area and getting the Guadalupe Radio Network started.

She worked as a District Manager for World Book International for nearly 30 years. She enjoyed being known in Midland as the "World Book Lady", and was passionate about providing schools and families with tools to help in the education of children.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her two husbands, her parents, two sisters and brother, and a son Joseph Francis Mueller, Jr. She is survived by daughter Anne Stuckey and husband Dan of Katy, sons Christopher Mueller and wife Jeannine of Lubbock, Paul Mueller and wife Shelia of Reno, Nevada, and Stephen Mueller and wife Becky of Midland. She is also survived by seven grandsons and seven granddaughters, and fourteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, many of whom called her "Aunt Mother".

A Visitation and Rosary is scheduled at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 6, at St. Ann's Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 7, also at St. Ann's. Burial will be at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso, Texas, at a later date.
