Carlyle D. Johnson was born January 22, 1918 in Hammond, Wisconsin to Price Langdon Johnson and Maret G. Gronne Johnson. One of twelve children, he lived his early years in Emerald, Wisconsin and graduated from Glenwood City High School. He served in the U. S. Army from August, 1941 to January, 1946 at several posts in the United States and in the China Burma India Theater. He married Ressie Mae “Ress” Greebon on January 1, 1943 in Midland. They had been married 57 years when she preceded him in death on June 14, 2000. He died August 16, 2011 in Midland, Texas.
In his career, he worked for Railway Express, First United Methodist Church of Midland, and Home Lumber Company.
C. D. served as a Cub Scout leader and Boy Scout leader for many years. At summer camps, he helped cook outdoors for 50 or so boys, with a cargo parachute serving as a dining fly. He helped teach boys first aid, star study, knots and backpacking. For their dedicated service to scouting, he and Ress were awarded the highest scouting volunteer award —the Silver Beaver. They were the first couple in Midland to both receive the award.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Midland where he and Ress served as sponsors in the Youth Ministry and as leaders in the LLL (Love, Laugh, Lift) Senior Adult Ministry, coordinating and participating in trips and activities for those programs. He was also a member of the Southside Lions Club for several years.
Survivors include sons, Duane Johnson (wife, Lynda) of Midland and Keith Johnson (wife, Beverly) of Garland, TX; sister Marvell Serier, of Baldwin, Wisconsin; sister-in-law Myrtle Hicks of Naperville, Illinois, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A family visitation will be on Sunday, August 21, 2011 from 2 to 3 p.m. at Ellis Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 22, 2011 at 10 a.m. in the Mabel Holt Glass Memorial Chapel at First United Methodist Church of Midland, with Rev. Macky Pitts officiating.
