and academia, retiring at the age of 85. His career began as a research assistant at the University of Miami’s
Marine Laboratory. Subsequently he established a research and trainingprogram for the Shell Development
Company in Coral Gables (1954–65) and then became Professor of Geology at The Johns Hopkins University(1965–70). In 1970, he returned to the
University of Miami as Professor ofSedimentology.
Bob is survived by his long-term friend Leonore Bernard as well as numerous friends, associates, and
former students.
Memorial Services will take place at Riverside Gordan Memorial Chapel in Kendall (5900 S.W. 77th
Ave., 33143) at 10:30 on Sunday July 16, 2017.
In lieu of flowers donations to honor Bob’s fascination for marine geoscience can be made to the
Department of Marine Geosciences at the University of Miami or to the Ocean Research and
