It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of beloved Architect Jose Francisco Teran, a celebrated architect and visionary in the field of design and construction. He was born on October 18, 1932 in Leon, Nicaragua and passed away on February 6, 2023 in Key Biscayne, Florida.
Jose Francisco Teran, Chico as he was best known, was a man who loved to live, had a passion for many things and a genuine purpose of giving all he had to his four beautiful children, his wife and life companion, his family, friends and community. His passion for the arts and life’s beauty transcended in family life and work.
Jose Francisco was a brilliant and talented architect, known for his exceptional work on the National Theatre Ruben Dario, in Nicaragua, which stands as a testament to his creativity and skill. His contributions to the world of architecture will forever be remembered and cherished. Having attended University of Michigan where he received his Bachelor and Master of Architecture, then went off to work with Minoru Yamasaki, architect of the World Trade Center. He founded AISA in Nicaragua with his long time friends and NATEX Architects in Houston, Texas in 1984 after exile from Nicaragua after the war. While in NIcaragua, he designed and master planned and built over 14,000 low income housing, ENALUF and multiple projects. In Houston, he designed Our Lady of St. John Church, Airline Diagnostic & Treatment Center and was the director and coordinator of the new “Metropolitan Cathedral” in Managua, Nicaragua. In 2003, he was nominated by George W. Bush as director of the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) where he served for 6 years to promote the use of BIM and Architectural technologies in the built environment.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Maria Lourdes Balladares de Teran, and their daughters, Carmen Leonor Teran Ocon (Fernando Ocon) , Maria Carolina Teran Weitzman (Sergio Weitzman) , Maria Lourdes Teran, and Maria Gabriela Teran López (Carlos I. Lopez). He was also a proud grandfather to Andrea Weitzman Volpe (Kevin Volpe), Adriana Ocon Nazario (Alejandro Nazario), Alejandro Weitzman, Marcela Ocon, Fernando Ocon, Carlos A Gallo, Isabella Gallo, Carlos Lopez, and Sebastian Lopez and great granddaughter Camila Isabella Nazario.
Jose F. Teran will always be remembered as a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who dedicated his life to his family, friends and living life to the fullest.
A funeral mass for Jose will be held Monday, February 13, 2023 at 12:00 PM at Saint Kieran Catholic Church, 3601 South Miami Avenue, Miami, FL 33133.
In lieu of flowers, the Teran Balladares family would appreciate a donation towards the building of the new church at St. Agnes in Key Biscayne, the parish where he regularly attended.
