Gizela Katz

Katz, Gizela (Gitel) - passed away on November 7, 2013 in Miami Beach, Florida surrounded by her loving family. Born December 3, 1920 in Nizhneye Selische, Ukraine, Gizela was a Holocaust Survivor who was liberated from Auschwitz in 1945. Gizela and her late husband Jacob married in Hummene, Slovakia in December 1945 where Gizela gave birth to sons Alex and Ezra. The family then fled the oncoming Communist regime to go to the state of Israel in early 1949, where they lived until 1958.

Gizela and her family moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1958 where they resided until she moved to Miami Beach permanently a few years ago to be near her sons and extended family.

Gizela was a strong-willed and independent woman who loved to play cards until the wee hours after working a 14-hour day at her husband's kosher butcher shop in Cleveland Heights.

She led a household of men, constantly commanding the utmost love, respect and admiration.

Her greatest pleasure was to cook for family, friends or anyone who walked into her home. In her later life, she most loved spending time with her grandchildren and watching videos and pictures of her grandchildren and great grandchildren in Israel.

Gizela is pre-deceased by her late husband Jacob (Yankel), her sister Ethel Hiller and her large family who perished in the Holocaust. She is survived by her sons Alexander and Ezra (Tati) and six grandchildren Rachel Katz Michael, Maya Katz Zachut, Lisa Katz Cooper who reside in Israel, and Jessica, Jason and Joseph Katz who reside in Miami; as well as eight great grandchildren who live in Israel.
