Born on the Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua, she emigrated to the United States in 1954 and worked as a cook and lady’s maid until she met and married John Eli Woods in 1958. Together they reared four children in uptown New Orleans, where they lived for many decades.
Lovingly called Mimi by her grandchildren, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and great grandmother. Compassionate to all, she was a gentle, kind and sweet soul. She was deeply loved by everyone who knew her and will be forever missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband Eli; her parents Juana Potoy and Pío Alemán; her siblings Francisca, Eusébio, Plácido, Petrona and Agustina Alemán.
She is survived by her children Aura Lila Montgomery, Wilfredo Woods (Mercy), John Eli Woods Jr., and Annette Woods; her 5 grandchildren, Jenny Woods Mejia (Aldo), Adrienne Woods (Rachel Speyrer), Bryant Woods, Giselle Montgomery (Peter Jones), and Gillian Montgomery; one great granddaughter, Camilla Mejia; her brother Cándido Alemán of Nicaragua; her bonus son David Montgomery, and numerous nephews and nieces in New Orleans, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., near Clearview Pkwy., in Metairie, LA on Wednesday morning January 13, 2021 beginning at 9:00 AM with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM in Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home’s chapel.
