Loretta Henriette Logan Martin passed on to her reward on Saturday, June 10, 2023, after 87 years lived in faith, grace, and love. Loretta was born October 29, 1935, in Opelousas, Louisiana, the only child of her loving parents, Carlton Edward Logan and Lucye Marie Gonsoulin Logan. Her family moved to New Orleans when she was a child. She graduated from Dominican High School in 1954 and graduated as Valedictorian of her class at Loyola University in 1958 - only the fifth person in the history of Loyola University to graduate with a perfect grade point average. She was a member of numerous honor societies, as well as the Our Lady of Fatima Sodality, and received the Father Percy A. Roy Award for having the highest average in the School of Arts & Sciences and the BEU Award as the outstanding medical technology program senior. After graduating from Loyola, she worked as a medical technologist at Mercy Hospital. She was married to her life-long love, the late Edward Joseph Martin, Jr., on September 20, 1958. She devoted her life to her husband, her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. They were the true joy of her life. Loretta and Eddie Martin were married for 57 years filled with family, faith, and joy before Eddie’s passing in 2016.
Loretta was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her beloved son, Logan Joseph Martin. She is survived by, and the loving and devoted mother of, Edward Joseph Martin, III (Julie); Désirée Martin Tanner (Barry); Lisette Vicknair Martin; and Nicole Martin Bartlett (Tad). She was the loving grandmother of Edward Joseph Martin, IV (Ana); Royce Ehret Martin; Sarah Ehret Martin; Andrée Marie Robards; Richard Lamar Robards, Jr.; Nicole Taillon (Marcus); Brody Logan Martin; Wyatt Logan Martin; Elijah Ryan Bartlett; Max Edward Bartlett; and Lucie Logan Bartlett. She was delighted by her great-grandchildren, Vivian and Marguerite Martin, and the anticipated arrival of baby Evelynn Taillon. Loretta also enjoyed sharing her life with her cousins and her life-long friends, as well as her dear brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, whose children and grandchildren she cherished and treated as her own.
Loretta loved her Catholic faith, and she and Eddie were founding parishioners of St. Philip Neri Parish in Metairie, where she worshipped from 1961 until her passing. She was dedicated to the ministry of Adoration at St. Philip Neri, in which she participated for many years. She was the exemplar of kindness and love, living a grace-filled life that is visible in each of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was welcoming and hospitable, spreading joy to all who entered her home and family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to the American Heart Association, Catholic Near East Welfare Association, or St. Joseph’s Indian School.
