Loving and devoted mother of Leslie A. Bonin (Nicholas J. Nelson), Gregory H. Bonin (Blake Coheley), and Brett A. Bonin (MaryBeth Makofsky). Loving, devoted and proud grandmother of Caroline Elise Bonin and Katherine Grace Bonin. Loving and devoted, (and favorite) sister of Bob Huet and his wife, Barbara Leggett Huet, and all of her nieces, nephews, and cousins. Joy was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey G. Bonin, and her husband of 48 years, Curtis G. Bonin, her mother, Alice Escoffier Huet, her father, George O. Huet, and her sisters, Eileen A. Huet, Therese Huet Roussel, and Orris C. Huet.
Joy was born on January 28, 1935, in New Orleans and grew up in Lakeview, and spent weekends and summers in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. She attended St. Anthony elementary school, Bay High in Bay St. Louis (when she and her brother, Bob, refused, with their parents' blessing, to return to New Orleans after an especially fun summer in Bay St. Louis), and Mount Carmel Academy where Joy met Suzanne Bonin, her future sister-in-law, who introduced her to her brother and Joy’s future husband, Curtis. Joy attended Dominican College until her marriage to Curtis when she became a homemaker and devoted her life to raising her family.
Joy’s love of travel and adventure, the sun and water, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast was instilled in her by her equally adventurous and curious father, George, who like, Joy, did not like to sit still. Joy spent almost as much of her early life in Bay St. Louis as she did in New Orleans. She was a natural fisherwoman and loved sailing and boating on “the Bay”, always happy in Bay St. Louis but, also, happy anywhere on earth that she happened to be. She and Curtis loved to travel with their children and grandchildren and especially with Joy’s brother, Bob, and his wife, Barbara, their adventures and misadventures provided endless entertaining stories. Joy enjoyed “running the streets” with her family and friends, not wanting to miss a celebration, event, gathering, concert, play, or movie or, simply, to take a long ride on a beautiful day. Joy loved everything about Mardi Gras, from watching a parade on the street to attending the Balls looking like a movie star. Joy was as beautiful inside as she was on the outside. She was joyful, optimistic, engaging, and fun to be around. She blessed those who knew her with laughter, smiles, and many cherished memories. Joy was a member of the Southern Yacht Club and Volunteers of America.
The family extends special thanks and sincere gratitude to those whose efforts, time, and prayers assisted Joy in her peaceful passing: Demetrice, Karen, Garionne, Roberta, and Carissa of Lakeside Hospice, and the employees of Southeast Louisiana Home Health, her pastor Fr. Jonathan Hemelt, Fr. Bernie Terrebonne, Fr. Francis Offia, Sister Daisy and all of the Sisters Servants of Mary, her lifelong friends Cynthia Derbes Lepage, Verna Bridgewater, Millie Maher, Angele Lajaunie Hosli and Michele Lajaunie and her constant companion, Ronald Jones.
Visitation will take place at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 3368 Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana on Friday, July 7, 2023, from 12:30 pm through 2:00 p.m. followed by a Mass at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at Lakelawn Mausoleum.
