Christine Shobert passed away suddenly and peacefully in her home in Harahan, Louisiana on January 28, 2018, just one month after her 70th birthday.
Christine is survived by her daughter, Laurie Holmgren, and her 3 cherished grandsons, Tyler, Erik and Bruno of Hollviken, Sweden. She is also survived by her sister, Wanda Krasińska, and brother, Mieczysław Trafis, of Poznan, Poland.
In 1969, Christine sought political asylum from Communist Poland in Canada. She got accepted to the University of Toronto where she graduated with a degree in French studies. After a short stint as a real estate agent in the Montreal, Québec Canada, area, she relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, in 1978.
Christine started her own business as a ship chandler on the Mississippi river. For 35+ years, her company served vessels who called on Mississippi River ports and ensured delivery of quality supplies, at a fair price, delivered with maximum customer service.
As a female (and single mom) in a male-dominated industry, she surprised and impressed many with her tenacity, courage and exemplary work ethic.
Christine will also be remembered for her generosity and active empathy for those less fortunate. She gave housing to a family plagued by cancer, she gave employment to fellow political refugees, and she adopted abandoned animals who wouldn’t have survived on their own. She was an everyday hero who took the time to care and react.
She will be missed as an entrepreneur, as a mentor, as an angelic aid in time of need, as an animal lover, as a sister, aunt and grandmother, but most of all, as a mom
