Anita Louise Smothermon was born January 26, 1944, in Corpus Christi, Texas. She went home to meet her Lord and Savior on February 26, 2023, in Mesquite, Texas at the age of 79 after many years of battling Alzheimer’s disease. The family is comforted in knowing that she is no longer trapped in her mind and body and is in the arms of the Lord and reunited with her family.
Anita is predeceased in death by her husband Don Smothermon to whom she was married for 40 years and parents Louis Richard and Bonnie Geraldine (“Gerry”) Newman.
She is survived by her sons Gary Pearson and wife Jodi, Richard Pearson and wife Jane, and Jeff Pearson. She was the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren - Taylor, Jordan, Meagan, Dakota, Jade, Lacy, Brock, Blake, and four great-grandchildren - Graham, Sloane, Lilah, and Kinley. She has two surviving brothers - Larry Newman and wife Linda, Mark Newman and wife Cindy, numerous nieces, nephews, and their families who are all left to cherish the life and legacy that Nita leaves behind.
Nita’s life was defined by her faith and her love for her three boys. She was firm but loving and fair, fiercely protective, and she instilled in them her christian values. She never missed a school or sporting event while still working full-time as an executive secretary and volunteering countless hours at Lochwood Baptist Church. She loved traveling with Don, reading, doing puzzles and crosswords, teaching Sunday school, decorating for Christmas, pansies, taking pictures of her grandchildren in the bluebonnets, collecting Boyd’s Bears and Longaberger baskets, walking barefoot in the grass, going to craft shows, writing in her journal daily, and making memories through photographs.
