Ruth Swan Scott

Ruth Swan Scott was known as many things to many people. She was a loved one, a friend, and someone special. To family and friends who knew her best, Ruth will be remembered as a very exceptional person.

Ruth was born July 10, 1932 in Winslow, Arizona. She was the daughter of Earl E. Swan and Florence Custard. A cowboy for Babbitts Cattle and Lumber, and O.G. Rails, and a school teacher on the Apache Reservation in White River at Cibecue.

Ruth was raised with four siblings. She had Velma, Blanche, Ronald and Lorna. Ruth was usually involved in all sorts of activities with her siblings. She and her siblings experienced rivalries and close loving relationships typical of a growing family, sharing many life experiences over the years.

Ruth enjoyed her college years, which may have been a challenge with all of the academics, responsibilities, and the sudden freedom that accompanied them, but Ruth was able to manage the balancing act. She earned her Bachelor's degree at Arizona State University, graduating in 1959 and being one of the first graduating classes to have the graduation ceremony at Sun Devil Stadium.

Ruth worked hard to be a good mother to her children and she did her best to fulfill their needs. Ruth was blessed with two daughters, Teresa and Michele. Another blessing for Ruth was the gift of four grandchildren, Stephanie, Christopher, Jeanette and Elizabeth.

Fortunately, Ruth enjoyed what she did for a living. Showing a strong work ethic, Ruth worked diligently and did her best to succeed in her career. Her primary occupation was Claims Examiner. She worked for Rulan Agency. Ruth always sought to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done.

Ruth enjoyed her leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. Her favorite pursuits were traveling, being involved with her church and especially spending time with her family.

Ruth’s faith was important to her. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church for 18 years. During that time, she was the President of the Legion of Mary for almost a decade. She also enjoyed going door to door on Saturday’s to talk about her church.

Ruth enjoyed traveling and time away on vacations. It was a chance for her to renew and relax, to visit new places and experience new things. Some of Ruth's vacations included travel to Ireland, Panama Canal, the Bahamas’, Germany, Australia, and Yellowstone Park. She also had plans on traveling to Mt. Rushmore this year as well as traveling to Iowa, Ohio, and Missouri to visit family and friends.

Ruth passed away on June 22, 2013 at Mesa, Arizona. She is survived by Her daughter Teresa (Chris) Schuerman; siblings Velma (Jimmy) Fiorina, Blanche "Binki" Hillyer, Ronald Swan and Lorna Poplaski (Tom); grandchildren Stephanie Michele (Rick) Wiggall, Christopher Ramsey, Jeanette (David) Foster and Elizabeth (Aaron) Bell; great grandchildren Evan, Cole and Adam Wiggall, Stewart and Crystal Foster and Kiera and Alina Bell. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews Gregory (Maria) Dircks, Adrienne Moore, Wayne Fiorina, Dominique (Jan) Waluk, Janet Dircks, Kelly Poplaski, Suzanne Poplaski, Nicole (Scott) Gormley,Rodney Swan, Sister in law Faith Stancliff, Scott Pennin (Kim), their children Stacie and Lorena. April Woolever and her daughter Jessica .

Simply stated, Ruth was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by her family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Ruth leaves behind her a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life she touched will always remember Ruth Swan Scott.
