Charles T. Carter was born in Camden, N.J. to Charles T. Carter and Carrie T. Carter (nee) Rucker, he is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters and a widower by the passing of his wife Virginia H. Carter (nee) Healy in 1994. He is survived by his current wife Phyllis Gholson, sons Jim & William Carter, three grandchildren and three stepsons.
Charles was educated in Virginia and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1942. As a Mustang Officer in the Corp, he rose to the rank of Major, subsequently joining the United States Army in 1957, retiring with the rank of Colonel in 1971. Charles served his country during three wars, seeing combat in three campaigns. He earned the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Cluster, Combat Action Medal with 2 stars and had service medals for WWII, American Campaign, China Service and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign. During his career he proudly wore the arm patches of the 1st Marine Division Guadalcanal, 3rd Marine Division, 1st Cavalry and the 25th Army Infantry.
Charles spent the last two decades in Mesa, Arizona where he became an avid golfer with a great love for the game. He succumbed to a progressively debilitating disease and quietly passed on to another life. Let everyone give thanks to this member of the “Greatest Generation” and for his life and this veteran’s service to this country. Let us celebrate his life. He will be missed greatly.
