Alvera Lovewell Kerr graduated from Loyola University School of Nursing and was an Army Air Corps nurse in World War II, serving in New Guinea and the Philippines. She married Robert (Bob) Kerr in Chicago in 1943. They raised three children, living in Minnesota, Michigan and Ohio. In Troy, Ohio, she worked as a Public Health Nurse. Upon retirement, they moved to Arizona and have lived in Friendship Village since 1999.
