William B. Smith, 63, of Memphis, died Tuesday, April 19, 2011. Born June 26, 1947 in Oskaloosa, IA to Bernard and Blanche Van Zante Smith, he graduated from Eddyville High School in 1965 and attended the University of Iowa. Will married Marlys Norby February 1, 1969 in Osage, IA. While living in Iowa City, he worked at Domby’s Boot Shop for ten years. In 1977 Will and Marlys purchased Cook and Love Shoe Stores in Memphis, TN and within two years had expanded to the Mid-South area. In 1982 Will was a finalist for the Mid-south Small Business Award. Cook and Love expanded into the men’s shoe business in 1984. Will was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church. He was a founder and board member of the Memphis Iowa Club and an avid sports fan. Surviving are his wife, Marlys; son Greg (Sarah) Smith of Michigan City, MS; daughter Kari Smith of Memphis; a brother, Larry (Ruth) Smith of Des Moines, IA; and two sisters Louise (Mike) Speers of Stillwater, MN; and Marilyn (Leroy) Powell of Wellman, IA. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens – Poplar Chapel on Monday, April 25, 2011 from 5 – 8. A Memorial Service will be held at Lord of Life Lutheran Church at 6865 Poplar Pike Memphis, TN at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Interment will be private. The family requests that memorials be directed to either Lord of Life Lutheran Church or to The Memphis Iowa Club c/o Cook & Love Shoes 3740 Business Drive, Ste. 103 Memphis, TN 38125.
