Germantown. Dr. Knox was born March 29, 1927 in Memphis to parents Sara Belle Castle and
Walter House Knox. He graduated from South Side High School and University of Tennessee
Knoxville, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He earned his Doctor of
Medicine from the University of Tennessee Medical School at Memphis. After serving as a
medical officer in the United States Air Force at Columbus Air Force base in Mississippi during
the Korean War, Dr. Knox completed his medical residency at the University of Indiana Medical
School in Indianapolis. He returned to Memphis, co-founded the Medical Anesthesia Group,
and was a staff member at Methodist Hospital in Memphis for 32 years. Dr. Knox was a
member of the Order of Demolay, the American Medical Association, and Independent
Presbyterian Church. He was a devoted fan of his beloved Tennessee Volunteers and the St.
Louis Cardinals. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marvilene Scruggs Knox of Memphis.
Three sons Stephen Knox and wife Sandra of Osceola, AR.; Russell Knox and wife Gina of
Germantown; and Robert Knox, Jr. and wife Julie of Murfreesboro, TN.; one daughter, Linda
Knox and husband David Cook of Memphis; six grandchildren, Nathan and Harrison Knox of
Germantown; Halle and Olivia Knox of Germantown; and Megan and Ellie Knox of
Murfreesboro; and five nephews and two nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents and
two older brothers, Walter H. Knox and Castle R. Knox. Visitation will be held Saturday, May 7
from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. at Memphis Funeral Home on Poplar followed by the funeral service at 11
a.m. Burial will take place at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests
memorials be directed to LeBonheur Children's Hospital.
