Phil was born in Memphis, Tennessee on May 21, 1961 to Charles B. Godwin and Volene B. Godwin. His parents predeceased him. He is survived by his wife Janet, whom he adored, two sons, Joshua and Andres and one daughter Tatiana. He is also survived by his two sisters, Pam (Chris) and Pat (Drew) and his six nephews, Andy, Jason, Jon, Charlie, Joel, and Sisco. Phil was blessed with five grandchildren: Zachary, Catherine, Amberly, Rebecca and Xander.
Phil graduated from Harding Academy and the University of Memphis. He served our country as a Captain in the U.S. Army and then many years with the Department of State, having recently retired. Phil made friends easily, whether being with his buddies at the Edge and Downtown or his wonderful neighbors in Rossville, Tennessee and Palatka, Florida. Phil has always been, “everyone’s best friend”. He was a man of great faith, in his Savior Jesus Christ, a man of great service to his Country and a man that was fearlessly devoted to his family. He was a man that confronted evil, where ever he saw it, and did so, until his final breath.
The family will receive friends at a visitation on Saturday, December 17 from 4:30 until 6:30 PM, at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38119. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Sunday, December 18 at 2:00 PM, at Memphis Funeral Home.
