passed away on Monday, December 7th, 2020.
He is survived and will be lovingly remembered by: his wife and best friend of 25 years, Joanne
Kerne Cain; his children Scott (Julie) and Kim (Marty) Newman; and step-daughter, Cindy
(Stephan) Leigh; 4 grandchildren: Lauren Konrade, Evan (Rachel) Cain, Brady (Alex) Newman,
Kynzie (Ian) Story and 4 great grandchildren, Maddox, Abel, Tahli, and Ava; his beloved
brother, Danny (Diane) Cain, nephew J.D.(Courtney) Cain, nieces Shannon (Todd) Kenyon,
Marcie (Jacob) Kelly, the mother of his children, Earleen McGuire Engle, and numerous other
extended family members. Mike was predeceased by his mother, Isla Mae Cain, and his father,
Charles E. Cain.
A native of Wichita, Kansas, Mike graduated from East High School in 1961. He proudly and
honorably served as a member of the Kansas Army National Guard for 6 years. He accrued
many hours of business education at Wichita State University, while working and supporting his
young family, and remained an avid Shocker fan his entire life.
Mike’s professional career began humbly as a bricklayer, and later included selling cars,
restaurant management, and retail. Most notably, he was on the early management team of
Pizza Hut, Inc. as it rose to national prominence, followed by an entrepreneurial foray into his
own chain of restaurants, before working his way into an Executive Human Resources position
with a 3PL Logistics company, that moved him to Memphis in 1988. His most impactful role
however, came as he channeled the disappointment of a corporate downsizing/early retirement,
into a Career Transition ministry he co-founded with a colleague in 2004. That ministry is still
active today and Mike continued to lead it weekly until recently. It is estimated that this ministry
has helped more than 3,000 people, who like Mike, found themselves forced into a career
change.
Mike served on numerous boards and committees over the years. His knowledge, expertise,
and heart of gold made him highly sought after by many. His true passion though, was serving
at his church, Advent Presbyterian in Cordova, Tn. He lived the saying, “Preach the gospel
daily, and sometimes use words.” Finally, his next greatest joys, after serving others, was
spending time on the golf course and fishing in the Gulf of Mexico with Joanne and many
friends.
Mike finished the race strong, with determination, perseverance, and so much grace. His
servant’s heart has created such a ripple of love that it will continue to touch multitudes of lives
indefinitely. “His Master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.’ “ Matthew 25:23
