On Friday, September 23, 2022, Marjorie Bates Mangrum, loving daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away at the age of 89. Marjorie was born on July 26th, 1933, in Memphis, Tennessee to James W. and Margaret T. Bates. She graduated from Treadwell High School in 1951, where she met her beloved husband, Bill. Marjorie and Bill were married on December 22, 1951. They soon traveled to Fairbanks, Alaska, where Bill was stationed in the United States Air Force, to begin their life together. After returning to Memphis, Marjorie began her career at the Defense Depot at Memphis where she rose to the position of Base Supply Officer. She retired in 1989 after over 33 years of exemplary service.
Marjorie was a woman of faith and active in her church. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. She was a generous and giving presence to those less fortunate and in need.
She loved and was dedicated to the life and family she built with Bill. She enjoyed spending time with her family at home and especially at their cabin on Pickwick lake where she taught her children and grandchildren the joys of boating, water skiing and fishing. She was also a talented pianist who often filled her home with the sounds of music. Marjorie was often a counselor and advisor to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as she was always dedicated to her family’s legacy and its continued success. Her character and influence will be reflected for generations to come in her family.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Mangrum Jr; father, James W. Bates; and mother, Margaret T. Bates. She is survived by her children, daughter Angie Webb; son Greg (Cassie) Mangrum; and daughter Alice (Bob) Zane. She is also survived by her grandchildren, granddaughters Trisha (James) Wolfe, Carrie (Greg) Mangrum, Krista (David) Moore, Halie (Justin) Hoback; Hannah (Brandon) Henson as well as grandsons Tres (Stephanie) Webb, Taylor (Agnes) Webb and Joshua Zane. She is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at the Memphis Funeral Home at 5599 Poplar with graveside service at 2 p.m. at Memorial Park Southwoods Cemetery, 5485 Hacks Cross Road, Memphis, Tennessee.
