Joyce Hill Garland, age 89 of Memphis, Tennessee passed away on Saturday, November 27 peacefully in her Whitehaven home of 63 years that she shared with her late Husband, Lanier E Garland Sr. Joyce was born November 21, 1932 in Marvell, Arkansas and grew up in her childhood home in Turner, Arkansas and attended Marvell High School. She later graduated from Draughon’s Business College in Memphis. She remained in Memphis and began working for EH Crump and Company where she met her husband of 60 years.
Joyce raised her family in the Whitehaven area of Memphis where she was a member of Whitehaven United Methodist Church, The Kennedy Book Club, and The Joygarten Club. She was an avid Bridge player and played in a Tennis League at Whitehaven County Club for years. She became a stay at home mom, after her first child was born, who dedicated her life to caring for and raising her children, and making sure they got to all their basketball games, soccer games, school and social events. She made sure breakfast was served, lunches were packed, and at the end of the day dinner was ready.
She is survived by her children, Lanier E Garland, Jr. (Vicki), Mary Hill McElwee (Todd), and Christopher D. Garland (Paige); grandchildren, Clarissa Wiles (Cody), Mallory Garland, Lane Garland, Ashlyn Schroyer, Robert Crump, and Avery Crump; great-grandchildren, Harvey Wiles and Garrett Wiles; brother, Max Hill; and many nieces and nephews.
During her final days she was lovingly cared for by these wonderful caregivers and neighbors, who cared for and loved her until her final day: Barbara Horton, Veronica Johnson, Teresa Hudson, Gloria Jackson and Deanna Ivory.
The family will receive friends at a visitation on Saturday, December 4 beginning at 9:00 AM until the funeral service at 10:00 AM, all at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee. A celebration of her life will immediately follow at Joyce's residence of 63 years.
A private interment will take place at Forest Hill Midtown Cemetery.
