Joseph “Joe” Hollins was born October 16, 1940, to James Hollins, Sr. and Elizabeth Mosley in Leland, Mississippi. Joe was preceded in death by his daughter, Demetric Hollins; two sisters, Emma Lee and Clara Mae; four brothers, Robert (Buddy), Willie James (Mickey), Eddie and Theoda (T); and his lifetime soulmate and companion, Mrs. Emma Steen.
Joseph Hollins departed this life on Friday, August 7, 2020, at 10:55 pm at Methodist University in Memphis, Tennessee.
Joe accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age. He later united with Friendship Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend W. A. Suggs, where he served as a member of the Usher’s Board. Joe also served as a vital member of the community, giving advice, offering help and also cracking a joke. Joe will be greatly missed.
Joe attended Breisch High School in Leland, Mississippi, graduating with the Class of 1960. While a student, Joe also served as a school bus driver. He was a jack of all trades.
Joe had a long-term career with Hardin’s-Sysco, formerly known as Hardin’s Frosty Acres. He began his career in 1963 as one of the original employees under the leadership of Mr. Hardin. Joe performed many tasks throughout his career. He retired in 2004 as a Transportation Supervisor after forty-two years of service. Joe was a very crafty man. Restoring old furniture was his passion; woodwork, gardening, and building unique fixtures in the home were his hobbies. After retiring, Joe enjoyed restoring old furniture, making it usable and profitable.
Joe leaves to cherish his memories, a special friend, Juanita Bynum; four sons, Clifford Hollins, Darin Hollins, Obie Steen (Nicole) and Joseph Simmons; and one daughter, Regina Simmons, all of Memphis, Tennessee; ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, three sisters, Earline Taylor and Dorothy Hall of Chicago, Illinois, and Shirley Hollins (Odie) of St. Louis, Missouri; three brothers, Otis Hollins of Lancaster, California, James Hollins, Jr. of Marion, Alabama, and Rev. Charles Hollins (Antionette) of Greenville, Mississippi, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
