John Franklin Shorb, Jr., age 86, died peacefully on Friday, September 20, 2013 at the Methodist Hospice Residence. Born in Silver Spring, Maryland, on October 16, 1926, he was a WWII veteran serving in the Navy. He worked for Safeway and managed one of the largest grocery stores in the Washington, D.C. area until deciding to buy his own grocery store in the mid-60s in partnership with professional baseball player Jim Lemon. After success in business, an avid golfer, he retired to Winter Haven, Florida, in 1985. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Wanda. He is survived by his son, Gary (Glenda) Shorb; daughter, Janice (Fred) Wein, both of Memphis. He also leaves his five grandchildren, Jennifer (Paul) Hagerman; John Shorb; Chris Wein; Anna (Corey) Holley; and Katie Beth Wein; and three great-grandchildren, Jack Hagerman; Will Hagerman; and Ella Grace Holley. A private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Methodist Hospice, 1211 Union Avenue, Suite 450, Memphis, 38104.
