Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on June 3, 1920, John was the only child of John William and Elizabeth Peters Henke. He attended Western Hills High School, in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he met his wife, Betty Jeanne Willson. They were married January 20, 1943 and were such a loving couple until her death December 11, 2013.
John served in the Army, as a Corporal, from April,1942 until December, 1945. He moved to Florida in 1952. His working career was in the automotive industry, working for Jeep and Nissan Motors. He moved to the Germantown area in 2003 to be close to his daughter and son-in-law.
John leaves his only daughter, Barbara Sumner (Carlton), and two Grandsons Carlton Sumner, Jr (Kaytie) of Rincon, GA, and Kristopher Sumner (Alice) of Laguna Niguel, CA.
He was blessed to have three Great-Grandchildren, Selah, Allison, and Noah Sumner of Rincon, GA.
He will be remembered for his kind heart, his gracious smile, and his love of fishing and playing his keyboard.
John will be laid to rest in the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery with military honors on December 28, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St Jude.
