James Charles Sams, 96, of Memphis, TN, formerly of Kingsport, TN, passed away April 14, 2014. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, and funeral services will follow at 10 a.m., at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Avenue in Memphis. Interment will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery. Mr. Sams proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a radio operator, having flown 31 combat missions aboard a B-29 Bomber over Japan. He attended the University of Tennessee, graduated from King College, and worked in sales for the Kingsport Press for 30 years. Mr. Sams was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kingsport for many years. He enjoyed golf and gardening, and he was a very talented wood craftsman. James was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Loretta Chapman Sams; and his son, Steven Sams. He is survived by his son, James C. Sams, Jr. (Doris); his daughter-in-law, Violet Sams; 2 grandchildren, James Charles Sams, III (Liz) and Amy Flood (Chris); and 4 great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Christian Flood, and Carolyn and Jonathan Sams.
