Hazel Ketchum Shelton, age 101, of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2022. Hazel was born May 24, 1921, in Falkner, Mississippi to John Thomas and Ethel Bailey Ketchum. At the age of 5 years the family moved to Ripley, Mississippi where she lived until after she graduated from Ripley High School. She attended Blue Mountain College.
She was married to Robert Lloyd Shelton and they moved to Memphis in 1942. Hazel retired from Lady Oris Hosiery Shop after 30 years. She was a member of Still Waters Baptist Church and an active member of the Glory Bound Sunday School Class. She was always busy. In the winter months, she was sewing and in the summer, she was usually outside taking care of her plants and working in the yard.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert Lloyd Shelton, and brothers, Hughey, John Thomas Jr. "JT", Elijah, Freddie, Russell, and Clifford Ketchum. Survivors are one daughter, Sandra Neville (Mark) of Lexington, Kentucky; one son, Robert Wayne Shelton (Gloria) of Oakland, Tennessee; and one sister, Sarah Fetter of Mason, Tennessee. Hazel also leaves 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was always devoted to her family.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 15, at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee, from 9:00 until 10:00 AM. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 AM, at the funeral home. Interment will immediately follow at Memphis Memory Gardens. Memorials may be sent to Still Waters Baptist Church, 2828 North Reed Hooker Road, Eads, TN 38028.
