Dr. Gloria McCuin Stewart, D.N., Psychology (“TOMPY”) was born April 26, 1954, in Memphis, Tennessee as Gloria Jean McCuin to the late James and Eva McCuin. She was the youngest of five children of which two preceded her in death, Isaac McCuin (April 30, 1983) and Dr. Jerome McCuin (August 25, 2010).
Gloria was saved and baptized at Mt. Gilliam Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of the late Reverend J.D. Jamerson where she became a devout “Born Again Christian.” After graduating from Melrose High School in 1972, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee and started a business to help plus size women embrace their sensuality with customized lingerie. While residing in Nashville, Gloria also joined Born Again Church and was very active in the ministry until 2003 when she felt the urge to move back home to Memphis. Upon her return, she attended Union University to earn a Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership, and soon after, Columbia Southern University to earn her Doctoral Degree in the same discipline. The completion of her advanced studies inspired “Dr. Stewart” to start a new business in Applied Behavioral Research, dedicated to helping employees in various companies reach their peak performance on the job (with her findings to later be published in a peer-reviewed, scientific journal).
“Tompy” as she was affectionately known by family and friends was smart, intelligent, and dedicated to finding entrepreneurial avenues to help people. Those that knew Tompy assigned her multiple titles: Lawyer, Doctor, Teacher, Confidant, Prayer Partner, Friend, Aunt, God Mother, Comedian, “Reli,” and Sister who loved unconditionally. If you had a question or idea, she would become an excellent researcher whether it was requested or not. If you had an issue, she would become an excellent problem solver with her two cents added as a bonus. And if there was any confusion over her stances, Gloria had the uncanny ability to raise her voice about 10 octaves higher to get your attention and to insure that her views were properly understood. She loved watching old movies all the while offering up additional film notes she researched on the side. She taught herself to play the piano and sing at an early age, and had the ability to listen to music and then recreate it on the keyboard. She was also excellent in creating and recreating unusual art forms.
Throughout her life, Gloria consistently counseled others while silently suffering with a debilitating, crippling, and painful illness that she endured for the latter portion of her life. To all that lived a life fortunate enough to be in her presence regularly, Tompy embodied love, brilliance, fierceness, and displayed an unapologetically supportive nature representative of God’s love for us all.
Gloria passed during the early morning hours on Saturday August 13, 2022 at Methodist North Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. She leaves to cherish her memories her oldest brother, James McCuin Jr. of Pahrump, Nevada; one sister, Mrs. Gwendolyn McCuin Jackson (Charles) of Memphis, Tennessee; a very dear cousin, Pamela Thompson in Memphis, Tennessee; and two aunts, Mrs. Janice of Shaker Heights, Ohio and Betty Brooks Page of Memphis, Tennessee. She also leaves several nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as a host of extended family members and friends.
