Evelyn Wimmer, 91, of Memphis and Jensen Beach, FL, died April 8, 2013. Known as “The Purple Lady,” after she began wearing only the color purple in the 1960. She was born to the late Joseph S. Herbert “Jack” and Lorena Mae Inscore Akers, October 15, 1921. They lived in South Memphis, where the family ran a grocery at 2208 Florida Street. In the 1930s, she and her younger sister, the late Martha Jane Akers Kegley, performed as “The Akers Sisters” on live radio broadcasts from the Peabody Hotel. In 1939, she married the late Joseph Edward “Joe” Wimmer, who co-founded Wimmer Brothers Printing in 1946. Family and fun remained the guideposts of their 50-year marriage. After the couple built a home at Cordova’s Walnut Grove Lake in 1968, she became an active member of the Valkyrie Club neighborhood organization, which sponsored Fourth of July and Halloween events throughout the 1970s and 80s. Evelyn exhibited a zest for life rarely seen, from leading a group in song with her ukulele, to dancing down Beale Street. She was ready for any card game if you had some change in your pocket or none at all. Evelyn loved to live. She is survived by four married children, Fred (Judy), Janet (Michael Sean Todd), Glen (Linda) of Memphis, and Eric (Karen) of Franklin TN, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe and granddaughter Kathleen Melanie Wimmer. The family would like to thank Methodist Hospice Residence for the outstanding care and love they extended to Evelyn and her family and in lieu of flowers encourage you to send memorials to Methodist Hospice Foundation, PO Box 42048, Memphis TN 38174. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 13, 2013 from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m., at Memphis Funeral Home on Poplar.
