Dorothy Haler Cook, 97, passed away Saturday, September 23, 2017. Dorothy was born July 25, 1920 to William Haler, Sr. and Inez Egan Haler. She married Louis S. Cook, Sr. on December 24, 1938. Together they had 3 children. Louis S. Cook, Jr. (Pam) of Goldsboro, NC, Robert W. Cook (Patricia) and Kathleen Cook of Olive Branch, MS. She was predeceased by her husband, Louis, her son, Robert, and her brother William Haler, Jr. She leaves to mourn her loss, her 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. She also leaves a host of friends, nieces, and nephews who all loved her dearly.
Dorothy, a lifelong Memphian, devoted her life to her chosen profession as a home maker, momma, and Nanny. Throughout her life she volunteered, as a Cub Scout Den Leader of Pack 66, and the Right to Life campaign. She also served on the Alter Society of St Michael Catholic Church. Among her favorite activities were organizing events for her children and grandchildren, always ready to play a game of Bingo, an outing to the Pink Palace, or a movie and some BBQ. She loved to try out new recipes, as she would come across them in the paper that she would read daily, but her go-to dessert was always homemade Banana Pudding, making everything from scratch. As a neighborhood mom in the High Point Terrace neighborhood for more than 50 years, she often provided drinks, snacks, or a place to hang out, and is often remembered by neighborhood families for her love for all in the neighborhood.
After her children were grown, she became an avid couponer and loved to enter contests at every chance. She was also very interested in genealogy and researching her family history. She was excited to learn that her family is related to George Washington as descendants of his grandmother. She would love to entertain and play Bunco with the ladies or Scrabble with some of her lifelong friends. She was a wonderful woman and will be missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, she asked that donations be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital of Memphis, TN.
