He was surrounded by his daughters Melissa (Luc) Belhumeur of Hanover, VA; Megan (Rob) Smith of Hanover, VA; and Amanda (Jerad) Nielsen of Henrico, VA. He will be greatly missed by his best friend, Jane Toomey, whom he was married to for 38 years and by his loving grandchildren Ainsley, Mason, Gillian, Cooper, and William. He is survived by his brother David (Nanci) Toomey of Airmont, NY and sisters Joan Toomey of Plant City, FL, Pat (Charles) Lynch of Suffern, NY, and Judy Zdanis of West Milford, NJ; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Peter Toomey; his parents Joseph and Dorothy Toomey; and close friend and brother-in-law, John Zdanis.
Stephen was born on January 29, 1951 in Paterson, NJ. He graduated from West Milford High School in 1969, where he played baseball, football, and basketball. He had a special appreciation for baseball and softball growing up as a Yankees fan and attended many games as a child. He was active in the softball community as a coach for his daughters and as a player and umpire. He had a successful career as a welder that took him to Hanover, VA in 1992, working for Alfa Laval Thermal until retirement. He will be best remembered for his sarcastic wit, tenacity, and his dedication to his family.
The family would like to thank the staff at MCV and Ashcake Family Physicians not only for their exceptional medical care, but also for their kindness and counsel. A special thank you to his daughter, Megan, for being his caretaker in his final years.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Church of the Redeemer in Mechanicsville, VA on Friday, July 10, 2020 at 9:30 am. A private entombment will follow at Signal Hill Memorial Park.
