George Butler Rhodes

George Butler Rhodes, a resident of Mechanicsville, Virginia, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 21, 2024, at the age of 87. Born on July 30, 1936, in Windsor, North Carolina, he was the cherished son of George and Martha Johnson Rhodes.
George was preceded in death by his loving parents and his brother, W. Douglas Rhodes. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Sara Ann Jernigan Rhodes, and their three children: Kathryn Bremner (David), Dianne Melia (Ken), and G. Bradley Rhodes. He was also a beloved grandfather to his three grandchildren, Elise Melia, Andrew Bremner, and Lauren Bremner.
A proud veteran, George served his country with honor for four years in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at the Strategic Air Command Headquarters at Offutt AFB, Nebraska.
George was a graduate of East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, where he earned a BA degree in Business Administration in 1963. Throughout his life, he remained a loyal supporter of ECU football, embodying the spirit of his alma mater.
For 39 years, George was employed in the trucking industry. He worked for Roadway Express, Inc. at nine facilities spanning from North Carolina to Rhode Island. Later, he continued his career with Wilson Trucking Corporation in Fishersville, Virginia.
In accordance with his wishes, George was laid to rest in the Rhodes family plot at Edgewood cemetery in Windsor, North Carolina. His legacy of hard work and loyalty will forever be remembered by those who were fortunate to know him.
