Michael was born in Topeka, Kansas to the late Thomas and Ruth Kennedy.
Mike Kennedy, a decorated veteran, dedicated family man, and beloved friend, passed away leaving behind a legacy of honor, love, and commitment. Born with a spirit of bravery and an unwavering dedication to his country, Mike served with distinction and valor throughout his military career.
Mike's military accolades reflect a life of extraordinary service. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, two Meritorious Service Medals, the Air Medal, four Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, and the Army Good Conduct Medal. He further earned two Army Reserve Components Achievement Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, three Vietnam Service Medals, three Armed Forces Reserve Medals, the Army Service Ribbon, two Overseas Service Ribbons, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. His courage and expertise were recognized with the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Rifle M16 Marksman Qualification Badge, and Pistol .45 Cal Expert Qualification Badge. His heroism was honored with the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation.
Mike served three tours in Vietnam and cherished his time in Germany, where he created lasting memories and friendships. His military service was a cornerstone of his life, demonstrating his loyalty, bravery, and commitment to his country.
Outside of his military accomplishments, Mike was a man of diverse passions and interests. He excelled in swimming, competing in high school and college teams, and winning numerous meets. His competitive spirit extended to darts, where he participated in and won many tournaments. Mike loved spending time at the beach, especially collecting seashells with his wife, a testament to his appreciation for life's simple pleasures.
Mike was married to his beloved wife for 38 years, celebrating their anniversary each April 20th. Together, they built a family filled with love and pride. Mike's affection for his family was profound, and he was especially proud of his sons. He cherished his loyal dog, Pepper, and had a deep love for all animals, having owned many pets throughout his life.
A lover of the outdoors, Mike enjoyed fishing and found solace in reading. He was a devoted fan of Kansas sports, always cheering on his teams with enthusiasm. Mike also loved watching movies, a pastime that brought him joy and relaxation.
In four words, Mike Kennedy can be described as loyal, accomplished, loving, and confident. His loyalty to his country and family was unwavering. His accomplishments, both military and personal, were numerous and significant. His love for his family, friends, and pets was boundless. His confidence in life inspired those around him.
Mike Kennedy leaves behind a rich legacy of service, love, and dedication. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, who will forever cherish the moments shared with him.
Rest in peace, Mike. Your legacy will endure, and you will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved you.
Michael is survived by his wife Jan Jones Kennedy, his two sons Jason Michael Kennedy and Zachary Dakota Kennedy (Grace), sisters Sandy Kokker (Tom), Betsy Steanson (Ray), and his beloved dog Pepper.
A visitation for Michael will be held Monday, July 8, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Haisten Funerals & Cremations, 1745 Zack Hinton Parkway, McDonough, GA 30253 (https://www.google.com/maps/search/1745+Zack+Hinton+Parkway,+McDonough,+GA+30253?entry=gmail&source=g).
