She was born March 11, 1943 in Atlanta, GA to Robert Leon Gordon and Verna Dorothy Bryce Gordon, the second of eight children born to this union. Diane was a 1961 graduate of Murphy High School in Atlanta and worked in the HR Department of Sears from the time of her graduation until her retirement. Diane married Douglas Theodore Stephens in 1982 and they had many happy years together until his death in 2019. She was a member of the William McIntosh Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, the Jamestowne Society, and the Magna Charta Dames. A lifelong Episcopalian, she was a member of St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church in McDonough, GA. Diane had a big, loving heart and touched many lives with her kindness and generosity. She leaves many to mourn her passing and rejoice in having known her.
Diane was predeceased by her parents, Bob & Verna Gordon, her half-sister Esma Jean Gordon Schoonhoven, and her husband Doug Stephens. She is survived by her brothers and sisters: Gail East, Linda (Ed) Clark, Bobby (JoAnn) Gordon, Steve (Laura) Gordon, Janet (Tom) Gray, Mark (Mary Jane) Gordon, Sharon (Greg) Dinsmore, brother-in-law Jan Schoonhoven, stepdaughter Karen Stephens Fincher, stepson Kevin Stephens, many nieces and nephews, special friends Tom Miller, Collins King, Andrew Hamilton, Delores Richmond and her children, and many other friends and relatives. She also left behind her faithful cats Angel, Dorothy Gail, Lucy Lou, and Grace. They stayed at her side faithfully until the end.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00pm on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at St. Joseph's Episcopal Church in McDonough, Georgia.
