Dr. David Samuel Sowell, MD age 95, of Hampton, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2022. David was born August 17, 1926 in Macon, Georgia to the late John Broadus and Janie Samuels Sowell. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Stilwell, grandson, Jeffory Glenn Stilwell, step-son, Henry McCullough Colvin, III, sister, Louise Sharpe and a brother, John Sowell.
Dr. Sowell faithfully served his country in the United States Navy at the end of WWII and then followed his dream to Georgia Tech to become an architect. While at Tech, he decided that his calling was truly to be a medical doctor which led him to the Medical College of Georgia. He was in private practice for many years, starting in Pelham and ending in East Point. For nearly ten years, Dr. Sowell was employed with the Industrial Clinic in Hapeville and after retirement, worked for Dr. Cooper's weight loss clinic a few days a month. Dr. Sowell had a very keen work ethic and was proud to have "MD" behind his name.
He was past president of the Georgia Tech South Metro Alumni Group and was a member of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. He enjoyed sports, especially, football and baseball and was an avid golfer. He liked to work out, work in the yard and travel with his wife.
Survivors include his wife, Lynn Sowell of Hampton; children, Libby Hoenig of Roswell, Susan (Abbey) Delisle of Aberdeen, OH, David (Cindy) Sowell, Jr. of Newnan, Jenny (Ronnie) Waits of Acworth, Patrick Kelly (Sarah) Sowell of McDonough, Brandy (Barry) Cook of Hampton and Marlene Sowell of Barnesville; thirteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, July 23, 2022 - 2:00 PM in the Haisten Funeral Home Chapel. Friends may visit the family one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are asked to be made to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Praying 4 Paws Dog Rescue, the Wounded Warrior Project or Tunnels and Towers in memory of Dr. David Sowell.
