Born on February 16, 1941 in Moneague, St. Ann, Jamaica to Edwin and Eloise Gordon, Admiral George Gordon was the 2nd of 15 siblings. In 1971, he met Kathlene King at a track meet. The two went on to get married later that year on November 21st. A farmer by trade, he built a good life for his wife and children in Jamaica. However, with the state of the island changing, he migrated to the US in 1986 as he wanted to provide a better life for his family. He was not content until all of his children were here in the U.S. with him.
He was first and foremost a man of God. Serving as a Deacon in the New York City 7th Day Baptist Church, he left a mark on all those with whom he came in contact. With a firm hand for discipline, he left a mark on all his children whenever they got out of line. He did his very best to raise his children to be people of integrity. He always reminded them that while they can run from man, they can never run from God as they are on His universal camera.
For work, he was skilled in carpentry and masonry work and would take side jobs to ensure that his family was provided for. He taught his children the value of hard work and showed them how to hustle to take care of their families. He wasn’t rich according to worldly standards, but he provided them with everything that they needed. He loved his family and though he had a tough shell, his oversized flour dumplings showed his softer nurturing side. His love for his wife, Kay (or mummy as he affectionately called her), was true. His smile when looking at her was infectious and his care for her was always evident. He had his faults, but they did not outweigh his character or the positive impact and light he shined on this earth.
He taught his sons what it took to be a man, a husband, and a father. He showed his daughter how a woman should be treated, protected, and cared for. He instilled in his children a sense of purpose and responsibility from a young age. He was a strict disciplinarian who loved unconditionally but would not hesitate to correct when necessary. The later years of his life were rough with him suffering from depression. However, that was only a small chapter of his life and certainly did not define him.
He was preceded in death by his mother (Eloise Gordon), father (Edwin Gordon), and siblings (Frida, Consada, Elijah, Karlene, Jennifer, and Sonia). Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kathlene Gordon; children, Hughart (Ailene), Ougart (Mercene), Gary (Jessica), Oniel (Kisson), Jason (Sabina), Theona (Gregory), Barrington, and Raylon; grandchildren, Brianna (Jayson), Marquis (Keona), Kaitlyn, Gabriel, SaVaughn, Aiden, McKayla, Kianna, Ella, Jahmani, Elias, Anthony, Isaiah, Samaiah, and Geneva; siblings, Ridgley, Violet, Blondel, Milton, Tamar, Iona, Nigel, and Nicholas; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and sorrowing friends who will miss him dearly.
