Emilie Helen Winter McSloy, of Viceroy in North Massapequa, passed away suddenly but very peacefully at home on September 9th, surrounded by family and those who cared for her. She was 88 years old. Emilie was born February 7th, 1936, to immigrant parents from Germany seeking a better life in America. She went to Franklin K. Lane High School in Queens and then Hunter College, and returned to Lane to teach History until she retired. It was there she met her husband Paul, a fellow History teacher, and they commuted together to work for decades, first from Levittown and then from Viceroy. Her husband survives her.
“Mrs. McSloy,” as she was known to thousands of students over the years, was a beloved and inspiring teacher, though one and all knew she was not the teacher with which to try and get away with something. She spent her retirement with her husband, traveling the country and seven continents for years, until Alzheimer’s began to limit her boundless energy, enthusiasm and curiosity.
Emilie was deeply devoted to her family, and was the last survivor of her siblings Jake, Trudy and Tom. In addition to her husband Paul, she is survived by her son Steven, her daughter-in-law Lynne, her granddaughter Maeve, and her nieces, nephews, and their children and grandchildren, too numerous to list here, but all of whom knew, loved and turned to advice from “Aunt Emilie.” Her beloved son Christopher preceded her in passing in 1992.
In her final years, Emilie was cared for daily by her husband, her great-nephew Brian Dennis and her wonderful aides Inez Faust and Andy Selibio, and other caring aides before them. Contributions in her memory are encouraged to organizations that work to prevent and cure Alzheimer’s, as no one as brilliant and full of life as Emilie should ever be so cruelly curtailed.
