He attended Oak Harbor and Marysville High Schools, where he was a natural born athlete and lettered in Basketball, Baseball and Football.
After graduating from Marysville High School, Hank spent two years during World War II in the Navy, 1944-1946. Upon returning home from the Navy he met the love of his life, Peggy J. Sherman, at the Marysville Bakery. Their first date was golfing at Cedarcrest with their best friends, Howard and Laferne Lian.
Hank and Peggy were married for 64 years, and 56 of those wonderful years were spent in the house they built together in Marysville, WA, raising their four children.
Hank is preceded in death by his father and mother, Earl and Harriett Sherman; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gene and Dorothy Hathaway; and brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Bernice Sherman.
Hank is survived by his wife, Peggy Sherman; uncle, Merritt Sherman; brothers, Earl (Susie) Sherman, Alvin (Roberta) Sherman; and sister, Harriett Trout; children, Sue (Bruce) Udman, Nancy (Mike) Holiman, Vickie (Brian) Melseth and Allen (Lynette) Sherman; grandchildren, Toby (Neva Geithman) Udman, Tiffany (Dean) Schneekloth Udman, Linsy and Craig Holiman, Chase, Ashley and Brittany Melseth, Derrick and Lacy Sherman, Dalton and Dylan Evans, Brandon and Serita Schaut; great-grand children Madison and Amanda Udman, Eva and baby Schneekloth and Isaac and Marissa Schaut; along with many cousins; nieces and nephews; and special friends.
Hank worked for Puget Power and Light, and the PUD, for 31 years as a Groundman, Lineman, Foreman and Supervisor of the Line Crews.
Hank retired in 1979 and enjoyed golfing with his friends at Cedarcrest Golf Course, or traveling with his best friend, Peggy. They traveled to Hawaii, throughout the Pacific Northwest, along the Coastline, and went on several cruises to the Caribbean, Panama Canal and Alaska.
Hank was an avid Husky Fan and had tickets for 43 years. He and Peggy loved taking his kids to the game; tailgating with friends and family, or traveling to the away games, including the 1982 and 1992 Rosebowl's.
Hank and his family spent many wonderful summers camping in the Pacific Northwest and Canada. Some of his favorite spots were Tiffany's Resort on Lake Curlew, Lake Okanagan in Canada, or digging clams at Ocean Shores. Every summer Hank had his pick of where the family would camp for two weeks, and then his kids selected the next vacation spot.
Hank was a very dedicated family man and taught his children strong work ethics, independence, and to treat everyone with respect and fairness. Hank was a gentle giant, loved by everyone that came to know him, and his heart was as big as the sky.
We will all miss him dearly, and will cherish all our special memories of him.
The family would like to thank the team at the Puget Sound Kidney Center at Smokey Point for their countless hours of taking care of Hank.
In lieu of flowers please make donations in Hanks's name to Puget Sound Kidney Center, Seattle Children's Hospital or the Schreiner's.
