Richard James “Dickie” Potter, 77, of Bassett, died Thursday, November 27, 2014, at Kindred Hospital, Greensboro, NC. He was born in Buffalo, New York on December 30, 1936. He graduated from Martinsville High School in 1955 and then proudly served in the United States Air Force, he worked for DuPont as an Engineering Specialist with 31 years of service and retired in 1993 and was of the Catholic Faith. Some of his interests included car and motorcycle racing and composing jazz music on the piano.
In addition to his parents, James Randall Potter and Catherine Horst Potter, he was preceded in death by his son, Richard James “Duke” Potter, Jr.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Frances Carter Potter of the home, daughter, Michelle Ann Potter and husband, Howard Hong of Fredericksburg, son, Troy Anthony Potter of Chatham, step-daughter, Katrina Reavie Amos of Martinsville, step-sons, Steven Rhett Chitwood of Martinsville, Christopher Bruce Chitwood of Bassett, sister, Judy Carr and husband, Jerry of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania and brother, John Potter and wife Mary of Martinsville, sisters-in-law, Alice Ann Townsend and husband, Barry of Orlando, FL, Elizabeth Rebecca Carter of Sanford, FL, brothers-in-law, George Isaac Carter and wife, Mary of Charlotte Hall, MD, Abraham Vanus Carter of Rocky Mount, step-grandchildren, Ryan Alexander Cox, Jared Daniel Hawley, Ricky Lee Marshall, Shannon Marshall Tilley, step-great-grandchildren, Rebecca Marshall, Kayley Marshall, Trenton James Stone, Brooklyn Tilly, Taylor Marie Marshall and the mother of his children, Lori Tucker of Martinsville. Also missing Dickie are his devoted and protective canine companions, Boogie and Missy.
The visitation will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2014 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Martinsville Chapel.
The funeral mass will be held Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 12:10 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Mark White. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
