Thelma Barron Barney, age 95, a long time resident of Martinsburg, and recent resident of the Williamsport Assisted Living facility, passed away on November 20, 2010 at the Washington County Hospital Center.
Born June 18, 1915 in Kearneysville, she was the daughter of the late Vadna Ruth Barron and Walter Lee Barron.
She was a lifelong member of the Martinsburg Seventh-Day Adventist church and served as Treasurer of the Rocky Knoll Seventh-Day Adventist School for many years.
Mrs. Barney was a farmer’s wife for many years and liked to tell stories about her experience with milking cows, raising calves, driving tractors and trucks and delivering milk to the Farmers Dairy. She went on to work side by side with her late husband to build and develop Pikeview Acres in Berkeley County.
Mrs. Barney, or Grandma B as she was affectionately known by her family, had an incredible sense of humor and a very adventurous spirit. At the age of 88, she was daring enough to ride for the very first time on the back of a jet ski on the Potomac River. At the age of 93, she rode and operated the Jet Ski herself. Her genuine interest in people around her, her infectious laughter and gregarious personality will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was an inspiration to us all.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Charles E. Barney. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Mason L. Barron, William L. Barron and F. Kenneth Barron as well as her granddaughter, Cynthia Anne Barney. She is survived by one sister, Mildred Lucille Smallwood, two sisters-in-law; Olive Ruth Strother; Gay Fink Barron; two sons and their wives, C. William Barney and wife, Carol and Jack E. Barney and wife, Barbara, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service officiated by pastor Claude Steen will be held at the Rosedale Cemetery at 11AM on Monday, November 22, 2010.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gives may be made to the rocky Knoll School Endowment Fund at 52 Advent Drive, Martinsburg, WV 25403.
