Born October 29, 1934, Patsy was the second daughter of Andy Russell Connolly and Virginia Mae Connolly. She graduated from Weston High School and the attended Glenville State College, to become a teacher. While in college she met and married James C. Smith and began their family. Her first teaching position with the Kanawha County School system began the fall of 1956 and was in a two-room school house, teaching 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade children together.
Patsy taught 1st grade the next eight years while working on her Bachelor’s Degree and graduated from Morris Harvey College (now the University of Charleston) in 1965. During those years she taught 1st grade at Frame Elementary and then at Elkview Elementary in Kanawha County. She continued her education and completed her Master’s Degree and obtained a Principalship Certificate.
In the fall of 1972 her husband's job brought the family to Berkeley County where she continued her career as a 1st grade teacher at Gerrardstown Elementary. In February 1979 Patsy and Jim returned to Kanawha County where she worked as a substitute teacher until returning to Frame Elementary as Principal. After retirement they returned to Berkeley County where their children & grandchildren were.
Patsy was proud to be part of several groups with many special friends: Norwalk Antique Car Club, Berkeley County Retired Educators Assoc., The "Quilting Bee" that met at Bedington Church and the "Piecemakers Quilting Guild". She attended the 1st Presbyterian Church Martinsburg and served in many positions through the years.
She is survived by the following family: Son, Bill Smith; his two sons, Andy & Jimmy Smith & his one grandson, Thor; Daughter, Sherry Campbell, Son-In-Law, Danny and their Children & families; Kenny & Tabi Campbell & their son, Brody; Joshua Campbell, and Elizabeth & Rodney Jenkins & their daughters, Amelia, Rivers & Rain. Her older sister, Betty Bond, several brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law as well as many nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her younger sister, Lucy Stewart and her husband.
Visitation, the service & internment will be at Rosedale Funeral Home at 917 Cemetery Road, Martinsburg. Viewing will be on Friday evening, January 10th from 6-8 PM and 1 hour before the service at 10 AM on Saturday, Jan. 11th. The service will be officiated by her son-in-law, Pastor Dan Campbell.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts can be given towards a Berkeley Co. Schools Retired Educators Scholarship, named in honor of the many years of care and service of both Jim & Patsy Smith, Gideon’s International and Hospice of the Panhandle.
