Born in Bloomery, West Virginia on November 27, 1924, he was the son of George Everett and Letha Viola Hovermale Johnson.
Along with his parents, he is predeceased by his wife, Anna Charles Riley Johnson, his sisters, Ruth Genevieve Heavilon, Janie Eloise Wotring, Janice Marilyn Myers, and a great grandson, Tyler Daniel Richards.
He grew up in Bloomery, West Virginia, where he attended a one room school house, and graduated from Capon Bridge High School in 1942. He interrupted his studies at Shepherd College to join the Marine Corp during WWII. He was a member of the Headquarters and Service (H&S) Section of the 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division and was one of the Communicators on island during the battle of Iwo Jima. His regiment helped capture Mount Suribachi and raise the stars and stripes on its summit. Following the battle of Iwo Jima he was dispatched to Japan during its occupation. He was away from home for three years during the war and returned to Shepherdstown, West Virginia in 1946 to complete his undergraduate education and marry the love of his life, Anna. He received his Master’s in Secondary Education from The George Washington University in 1951. He was a high school math, chemistry, physics and science teacher, and taught in Shepherdstown, Martinsburg, and Hagerstown, finishing his career in 1986 at South Hagerstown High, Maryland.
He was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Martinsburg, West Virginia. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and hiking. He instilled a strong sense of family and community in those who knew him well.
He is survived by his children, Sandra Sherman (Richard) of Hamilton, VA, Beverly Vegas (Vicente) of Shepherdstown, WV, and Daniel Johnson (Sherrie) of Hedgesville, WV; 6 grandchildren, Richard Sherman (Anita Gabrosek) of Pine Grove Mills, PA, Laura Sherman (Stuart Orser) of Lovettsville, VA, Summer Griffith (Todd) of Inwood, WV, Karen Richards (Curtis) of Hedgesville, WV, Lisa Johnson of Berkeley Springs, WV, and Leslie Vegas of Manteo, NC; 4 great grandchildren, Connor Moss, Lyla and Molly Orser, and Curtis “CJ” Richards, Jr.; 2 siblings, Glenwood Johnson and Kitty Hott Swick, both of Bloomery, WV; 2 sister-in-laws, Patricia Adams of Lexington, NC and Gertrude “Trudy” Johnston of Kansas City, KA; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Friday, September 8, 2017 from 2-3pm at Rosedale Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 3pm with Pastor Rufus Burton officiating. Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
Pallbearers are his nephews Ken Johnson, Matthew Hott, Brad Wotring, Greg Sowers, Sam Fleming and his grandson, Richie Sherman.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Martinsburg or to the American Red Cross.
