Betty L. Bowers

Betty Lou (Brown) Bowers, formerly of Martinsburg, WV passed away May 15, 2021, at Homewood Retirement Center, Williamsport, MD, where she resided since 2002. She was the widow of the late Eston Elwood Bowers.

Recently reaching her 97th birthday, Betty was born on May 12, 1924 in Jefferson County, WV. She was the daughter of the late Mervin Clarence and Ruth Naomi (Ramsburg) Brown.

Betty graduated from Hedgesville High School in 1941 and was a past member of the Eastern Star. She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Martinsburg and volunteered many years with the pie makers for the annual church bazaar. More recently, she faithfully attended church at Homewood. As a Homewood resident, she enjoyed the Mountaineer Club, the knitting group, and volunteered in the community store. Betty loved to read and to crochet. She was a fan of the WVU Mountaineers, the Baltimore Orioles, and the Washington Football Team. Prior to her move to Martinsburg in 1966, she worked as a cook and as the cafeteria manager at the then, Shepherd College Rams Den.

Betty is survived by her son, J. Calvin Whittington and wife, Connie of Calabash, NC; stepchildren: Barbara Kakalec and husband, Peter of Fairfax, VA, Dale Bowers and wife, Nancy of Perrysburg, OH, and Susie Manspile and husband LeRoy of Martinsburg, WV; 16 grandchildren;16 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband she is preceded in death by her son, Walter Eugene Whittington; stepsons: Roger E. Bowers and Donald L. Bowers; and siblings: Thelma Byerly, Doris Whitfield, Edna Brown, Elizabeth Seppala, Nancy Brown, Ralph Brown, Jack Brown and Robert E. Brown.

The family will receive friends at Rosedale Funeral Home from 1pm- 2pm on Monday May 24, 2021. A graveside service will immediately follow. Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
