Augusta, Georgia-Sandra Mercer, 67, died peacefully on Sunday, May 2, 2010 at University Hospital.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 7, 2010, at 12:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Advent Christian Church, 1815 Central Avenue, Augusta, Georgia.
Sandy was born in War, West Virginia. She graduated salutatorian from Big Creek High School before attending Berkshire Christian College. She relocated to the Augusta area in the early 60s where she married Don Sloan and had two children.
Sandy was known to many for her volunteer services and Christian youth leadership. Before her illness she committed herself to many organizations. She was a member of Bethlehem Advent Christian Church for many years. She formerly was the President of Augusta South Rotary Club, on the board of directors for the Augusta Museum of history, worked with Pride and Progress of Augusta-Richmond County, and Augusta Clean and Beautiful program.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lt. Col. Garnet and Lucy Mercer; and brother, Andrew Mercer. Survivors include her boyfriend of many years, Cliff Cooper; two sons, Brian Sloan (Tina); Kevin Sloan (Angie); four grandchildren that she adored, Aaron Sloan, Blake Sloan, Noah Whitesell and Jackson Sloan; sister, Garnett Durkee (David); niece, Renee Phillips; Aunt and Uncle, Mary and Don Tunnell; cousins, Mrs. Iris Lloyd (Ronnie) and Donnette (Mike) Gustafson.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 4255 Columbia Road, Martinez, Georgia 30907.
