Louis is survived by his sons Bernie Silverstein (Atlanta, Ga) and Sam Silverstein (Air Force), his sister Mary Silverstein (Sarasota, FL), and his father Bernard Silverstein (Augusta Ga). Louis’s sister Lynn Jackson Silverstein passed away July 14, 2023, and his mother Robin Silverstein passed away in 2012.
Louis grew up in Augusta GA, attended Augusta Preparatory Day School, and graduated from Emory University with a BA in Chemistry. He was a member of Adas Yeshuran Synagogue, Rotary Club of Augusta, and was an Eagle Scout.
After college Louis moved back to Augusta and joined his father running the drycleaning business that his grandfather Samuel Silverstein started. Louis had a huge impact on the growth of the family business by adding multiple retail locations (18, including 2 acquisitions), and military contracts with 3 army bases and 4 air force bases. He also was involved in adding a shoe shop, embroidery business, and sewing plant. His chemistry degree was originally intended to help him get into dental school to be a dentist or orthodontist, but ended up proving useful in the drycleaning business for understanding fabrics, chemicals, and spot removal. He took several classes and trained co-workers but had natural skills and talent when Silverstein’s became one of Levi’s and Duckhead’s primary partners to pre-wash, stonewash, and whitewash jeans and jackets when the trend first began. Louis was always striving to learn and become the best he could be at whatever project he undertook.
Louis was a devoted father, son, brother, and friend to many. His pride and joy first and foremost were his twin sons, Sam and Bernie. He loved spending time with them and frequently took them snow skiing, boating, and jet-skiing. He enjoyed water skiing so much that he went to ski camp to learn how to barefoot water ski. Other hobbies included movies, travel, billiards, and cooking. He loved going to Las Vegas to gamble, mostly playing poker. Louis was an excellent griller, and could not show up to any family dinner without bringing one of his specialty dishes, the Green Jacket salad.
Louis was quiet and reserved, but also kind, loving, loyal, smart and funny. After he was diagnosed with Huntington's Disease, he remained positive, didn’t complain, and continued to work and enjoy his family, friends, and hobbies as long as he could. He never gave up living, fought the disease as long as possible, and will be missed by many.
A graveside service will be held at 9:00 am, Thursday, August 17 at Westover Memorial Park, 2601 Wheeler Road, officiated by Rabbi David Sirull.
