Shirley Ledet Powers passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at the age of 87. She was born on November 3, 1935 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Clement J. and Bertha Lester Ledet. Former wife and beloved friend of the late Morris Joseph Powers, Sr. Devoted mother of Peggy P. Knight (Terry), Karen P. Laborde (Tommy), Gloria P. Hensley, Sheila P. Frederick (Larry), Thomas J. Powers (Cindy), Kelly Rodrigue (Jennifer) and the late Morris J. Powers, Jr. and Barbara P. Eastridge. Proud grandmother of Stephanie Knight Lott, Brandi Knight Guerrero, Wendy Laborde Rodrigue, Brittany Hensley Nash, Eric Hensley, David Faircloth, Carrie Faircloth Johnson, Larry Frederick, Jr. Morris, III, Michael, Katie Powers, Ashley and Thomas "TJ" Powers, Nathan Angelle, Brittany and Arthur Elliott, Di Wu, Amy Matone Bate, David Lewis, Tyler Eastridge, Kyle and Alyssa Rodrigue. Loving great-grandmother of Madison, Emma and Alyssa Lott, Ryder Guerrero, Collin and Logan Rodrigue, Gianna Nash, Allusion McDowell, Barbara, Lucas and Melrose Faircloth, Aaliyah, McKenzie and Michael, Jr. Powers, Gunner and Daxx Frederick, Brandon Collura, Ricardo "Rico" Matone, Alex Bate, Destiny Copeland, Jayden Jenkins-Lewis, Alexis Martinez, Alayna Landreau, Severiano and Aliya Lopez, Nolan and Landon Eastridge and great-great grandmother of Leo Malone. Loving sister of Paul Ledet, Sr., Rita Ledet and the late Clement "CJ", Alvin, Robert "Bobby", Gerald "Jerry", Joseph and John Ledet, Cecilia Caperino, Bertha Dragon and Ann Rodrigue. Shirley was also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Shirley was born in New Orleans and a resident of Waggaman., Louisiana. She retired from Hibernia Bank and was employed at New Orleans Airport, Atwater Consultants and she also worked for Jefferson Parish Public School System as a substitute teacher. After retiring, she enjoyed volunteering at Live Oak Manor School in Waggaman. She was a devoted member of Our Lady of the Angels Church in Waggaman and was an active member of the Knight of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary. She held every local and state office for the K of C and was extremely proud to attend and run many conventions for the organization. She was also a current member of the Waggaman Civics Association. Her love for the community and friends was unstoppable.
Shirley was the most selfless and sincere mother, grandmother, great and great-grandmother. There was nothing that she wouldn't do for her family. One of her greatest joys was the gift of giving. She loved sale shopping with her daughters and enjoyed her frequent visits to auctions, garages sales and getting a good bargain. She also loved hosting family reunions, holiday gatherings and playing games with her family. Shirley was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all.
Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Friday, August 11, 2023 from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at Westside/Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 5101 Westbank Expressway in Marrero. Visitation will continue on Saturday, August 12, 2023 from 10:00 AM until 11:45AM. Funeral Mass will begin at 11:45 AM and burial will immediately follow at Westlawn Cemetery in Gretna.
