Preceded in ethereal strength by no other, Eva Verdin Alexie, 88, joined her bayou bred counterpart, Jules Alexie, Sr., on Monday, June 24, 2024. She’s now jitterbugging with her mother and father, Lucy Autin Verdin and Maximillian “Mack” Verdin; her siblings, Ellen V. Rodriguez, George Verdin, Melvin Verdin, Robert Verdin, Randy Verdin, Georgia V. Henson, Margie Verdin, and Norman Verdin; her children, Karen Henson (Mike and the late Junior) and Ashley Zar; and her grandchild Taylor Alexie. Still hanging out Earth side keeping the imperfect family tree watered are her siblings, Shirley V. Nagel and Jerry Verdin; her children, Jules Alexie, Jr., Lisa Ruttley (Cord), Glen Alexie (Robin), Robin Benoit (Rickie), and Julie Alexie (*Swiping Right*); her grandchildren Rickie Benoit, Jr. (Kim), Jonie Cook (Doug), Danielle Guidry (Jason), Sean Hamilton (Lindsey), Brooke Lovell (Brandon), Jules Alexie, III, Alicia Benoit, Trey Henson (Kelly), Jessica Taylor (Justin), Amanda George (Aric), Mindi Tapie (Chris), Kailyn, Peyton (Kayla), Hannah, Beau, and Cole; her great grandchildren, Rickie, Ryan (Brandi), Jade (Josh), Jase, Morgan, Tayler, Angelo, Jillian, Brenna, Caden, Ava, Lucy, Nathan, Embree, Jax, Tyler, Rex, Jason, Joseph, Bricelyn, Annabelle, Jules, Raylon, and Elliana; and her great great grandchild, Violet. She was also an aunt to many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, and cousin, sister in law, and friend to an extensive array of devoted people.
Eva (“Maw”/“Ma”) was like no other. Built from a cloth that is no longer woven the same, she traveled a journey of pain, joy, humbleness, and gratitude of the people that looked up to her. As the matriarch at the forefront of her family, everyone had a place in her home no matter their background or life choices. She fed everyone, loved unconditionally, and yelled the truth you needed to hear whether you cared to hear it or not. Standing on her waterfront Lafitte balcony, every passerby knew her, respected her, and understood what it meant to be loved by her. Catcher and eater of turtles among other wildlife she stewed over, she was fierce. An advocate for the downtrodden and firm believer in her coveted role as a mother imparting her motherly wisdom on others, she left an imprint on this world that will be difficult to replicate. However, her legacy is such that her girls will make sure to carry on her matronly family values, and her sons will continue trapping the wildlife for them to cook in her honor. Her grands and great grands were blessed beyond measure for as long as they had her, and no matter their life path, she held and helped guide them all. Her family is truly a dying breed of unconditional unity, and she made sure until the very end to keep everyone in line. The line may be a little zigzagged and skewed, but a line nonetheless. A proud family line. As the full moon rises and twilight kisses the earth, you can hear the whisper of a trolling motor from a boat carrying those no longer sparkling from her neck. They’re sparkling among the stars together now, and the forecast shows the catch will be plentiful.
The family would like to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time. A special thank you to the Hospice team that provided exemplary care and displayed true compassion, especially Melinda and Bridget.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a future date.
