She was born August 23, 1926, in Bremond, TX to Mabel and Alfred Clark. Never doing anything slowly, Margaret graduated from high school at age 16 and immediately began teaching high school in Reagan. She attended Sam Houston State University during the summers and taught school during the year, graduating with a degree in Art and History. While Margaret was teaching, she fell in love with the school principal and married Sam Gray on August 28, 1949. They made their home in Marlin, TX, enjoying a wonderful marriage and life partnership for 59 years.
Oil painting, crafts, sewing and teaching were Margaret’s passions. She was never without a project and continued to teach art classes at the Marlin Senior Center long after she retired from teaching in public schools. Her belief was that everyone is able to be creative and, thanks to her, countless students of all ages learned to express their ideas through art. Many of her oil paintings depict the beautiful landscapes of Colorado, where she and Sam spent happy summers camping. She was also an avid cook and no one ever walked away from her table hungry!
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Sam Gray, sister Catherine Holt and brother Alfred Clark, Jr.
Margaret is survived by her son, Gary Gray of Marlin, daughter Elaine Davis and son-in-law Mark of Denton, daughter Ellen Patrick and son-in-law Tim of Memphis, TN, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Carriage House Assisted Living and Shawna Sullivan for their care and support for Margaret.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Marlin Public Library.
After the memorial service the Gray family welcomes visitors to come by the house in Marlin from 6 – 8pm on Monday evening.
