William A. Hobbs, of Marietta, GA, passed away on October 20, 2016 at the age of 89. He was one of eleven children born to William Franklin and Ethel Pope Hobbs in Dexter, GA, on December 30, 1926. He was a drafted into the Army in 1945, where he served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. After that, he attended the University of Georgia and graduated in 1950. He met his wife, Betty Glenn Wier, while attending school in Athens, they married in 1951.
After graduating from the University of Georgia, he re-entered the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was a career Infantry Officer, he commanded units from platoon to brigade size. He was a Master Parachutist and senior Army Aviator. He serviced in Japan, South Korea, Europe, and South Vietnam. His assignments included tours with the 11th Airborne Division, 82nd Airborne Division, 187th Airborne Regimental Combat team, 1st Aviation Brigade, Army Staff in the pentagon, and he was a graduate of the National War College. He also received his Master’s degree in International Affairs from George Washington University in 1973. His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 21 Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star, and Combat Infantry Badge. After retiring from the Army as a full bird Colonel, he was a manager in The Department of Administrative Services for the state of Georgia for 17 years.
Bill Hobbs resided in East Cobb, Marietta, GA. He was an avid tennis player and ranked as high as #5 in the state of Georgia. He had an unwavering faith in his Savior Jesus Christ and was an active member of Eastside Baptist Church and a member of the Gideon’s.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty, of 65 years, two sons and one daughter: William A. Hobbs, Jr., Virginia Lee Hobbs, Allen W. Hobbs; 2 daughters-in-law: Debbie Hobbs, Tracy Hobbs; 1 granddaughter: Makenzie Hobbs; 4 grandsons: Jeff Hobbs, Josh Hobbs, AJ Hobbs, Cole Hobbs; 4 great grandsons, 2 sisters: Robbie Sapp, Nell Phelps; and nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Gideon's, www2.gideons.org/donate. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00PM at H.M. Patterson & Son, Canton Hill Chapel on Sunday, October 23, 2016. Funeral Arrangements will be held at 11:00AM, at Eastside Baptist Church on Tuesday, October 25, 2016.
