Thomas Edward Godfrey, Jr., 68 died October 30, 2021. A loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife, Elwyn Green Godfrey, son Thomas Edward Godfrey III, daughter and son-in-law Julia Godfrey Torell, and James Bruce Torell.
Thomas or “Tommy” as he was affectionately known, was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on August 24, 1953. Tommy was the only child of Thomas Edward Godfrey, Sr. and Lois Phillips Godfrey. Thomas Sr. was the owner of a small gas station, and Lois worked in local schools. The love, attention, and hard work ethic that his parents showed him made a lasting impact on Tommy. On any given day, you can hear the band practicing at the University of Alabama from the house that he grew up in. From an early age, until the very end Tommy loved Alabama. From 1971 to 1976 Tommy attended his beloved University of Alabama as a student in the Business School. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and remained friends with many of his Tuscaloosa connections his whole life.
After graduating college, Tommy lived briefly in Birmingham before relocating to Atlanta, Georgia. As a young man, Tommy was an avid music lover, especially The Grateful Dead and The Rolling Stones. After a few years of having long blonde hair and jamming with a garage band of his own, Tommy grew up and met his wife Elwyn. Elwyn and Tommy were married in 1986 and had two children. Tommy’s commitment to hard work and providing for his family is evidenced by his long-standing employment. He worked for Whitaker Oil for ten years, before taking a job with Kohl Marketing that he would hold for 30 years. Tommy was loyal and funny, with a big personality, and he took joy in being with friends, particularly on gameday. He will be sorely missed, and belovedly remembered.
Funeral services will be held Saturday November 6, 2021 at 11 AM at The Episcopal Church of St. Peter and St. Paul at 1795 Johnson Ferry Road in Marietta, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
