JJean Nix Bowen, 83 years young, went home to be with her Savior on April 30, 2023, in Marietta, Georgia. Jean was born to parents John D. Nix and Ruth Tyler on September 19, 1939, in Birmingham, Alabama. Jean began her childhood in Birmingham, and eventually moved to West Virginia with her family. She graduated from Magnolia High School in Matewan, West Virginia. During her high school years, she met her former husband Bernard. Together they had a beautiful family. Jean had a full-time job as a wife, a mom, and a homemaker. It wasn’t until after her children finished their high school careers that Jean stepped into the work force. Jean retired as a Paraprofessional for Cobb County School Systems at Milford Elementary. In 1969, Jean and her former husband, Bernard, were instrumental in the creation of Milford Church of God. She was involved in the choir and Ladies’ Ministries for over 25 years. She loved church and rarely missed being there on Sunday mornings. For the past two years, she attended West Ridge Church.
Jean was very active and looked forward to attending her Silver Sneakers exercise class at least 3 times a week. She enjoyed having lunch dates with her niece and girlfriends. She had been on many world travels and still loved visiting the beach. Jean enjoyed watching a variety of TV, which ran the gamut from the ministry of Dr. David Jeremiah to the Bachelorette! A true southern belle, she was known for her biscuits, chicken and dumplings, and dressing. She resided with her daughter and son-in-law and felt very blessed being a daily part in the lives and upbringing of her three grandchildren. She was a familiar face at all their events and activities at Mount Paran Christian School for over 16 years. The day before her passing, she was even cheering on her great grandson at the ballpark.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Annie Jo Bowen, Shirley (Pat) Baidoon, Eleanore Adray, and Polly Nix; and brothers: William Nix, Clyde Nix, Harry Nix, and Johnny Nix.
Jean is survived by her loving children, Bernardette Sigman (Carl) and John Bowen (Jeff); her grandchildren: Chandler Sigman (Grace), Catherine Sigman, and Caroline Sigman; her great-grandchildren: Bowen Sigman and Parker Rose Sigman; her sister, Margaret Buie; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews, family, and friends.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at West Cobb Funeral Home in Marietta, Georgia. On Thursday, May 11, 2023, Jean’s family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 pm, with a service to follow at 2:00 pm at Living Stone Church in Marietta, Georgia.
Interment will immediately follow the memorial service.
