James Edward Turnipseed, of Powder Springs, GA, died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes on the morning of July 11. He was 97. James was born September 5, 1924, in Fayetteville, GA to Charles and Mary Turnipseed. After moving to Atlanta at the age of 8, he and his brother Norman continued to spend every summer on the farm in Fayetteville with their grandpa and grandma. He graduated from West Fulton High School in 1941. After graduation, he served in the Army Air Corps in WWII where he was a radio operator and navigator flying the Hump over the Himalayas. He flew 115 missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war, he returned to Atlanta, married Anne Marie Buckner, and started a family. He and Anne were very active in their church, Sharon Baptist, where he served as a teacher and deacon for many years. He was a member of the Masons of Georgia for over 50 years. He worked for 37 years at Lockheed Georgia in various roles as a tool procurement specialist. In retirement, James and Anne built a house in Powder Springs and became active members of the First Baptist Church of Powder Springs. He loved doing things for others. He always had a backlog of projects to work on in his workshop. He loved old cars, gardening, traveling, fixing things, and spending time with family. He was a kind, loving, generous man who will be missed but not forgotten. The family would like to thank the caregivers at the Beehive Homes of Gainesville, GA for the love and support that they provided to James during the last year and a half.
James is preceded in death by his wife, Anne, his son, Wayne, his sisters, Virginia Adams and Kathryn Turner, and his brother Robert Turnipseed. He is survived by his beloved dog, Daisy, his brother, Norman Turnipseed, daughter, Julia Johnson (Joseph), his son Ken Turnipseed (Sherry), his grandchildren, Jennifer Valentine (Mark), Kendall Turnipseed, and Allison Turnipseed, and his great-grandchildren, Dillon Valentine and Sylvie Valentine.
