Dr. Gary Bush graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with bachelor and masters degrees in physics, a masters degree in nuclear engineering and a master degree and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. He was on the Bubble Memory design team at Intel in the 1980s. He was a senior scientist and Fellow at Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Technology Center, where he worked for over 30 years. He published over 30 refereed research papers and made major contributions to the field of Magnetics in addition to being CoEditor for INTEMAG, Stockholm (1993), Seattle (1995) and San Antonio (1996). He was the founding Chairman of the University of Texas Industrial Advisory Board of the Center for Magnetics, an Adjunct Professor in the Advanced Materials Research Institute at the University of New Orleans and Past Chairman of the 7th technical committee on non sinusoidal fields of the IEEE EMC Society. He was a member of Eta Kappa Nu, Sigma Xi, MIT Electromagnetics Academy, IEEE Magnetics, CMPT Societies, and a Senior Life member of IEEE. In addition, he founded four
companies: Electric Trading Company, DosTek, Polar Magnetics, and Southern Magnetics.
Gary often used that title of Dr. Bush. He would say call me Dr. Bush, Dr. Gary, or just Gary, but Mr. Bush makes me think you are referring to my Dad. He enjoyed many hobbies. His call sign in HAM radio is W6GB and he loved to keep track of how many countries in which he had made a contact. In addition to amateur radio using Morse Code, he enjoyed model railroading, repairing small equipment, astronomy, taking measurements with his big red magnet, real estate and negotiating a deal. Perhaps he got the most fun though from driving his John Deere Gator around the neighborhood to talk to friends and neighbors or strangers, and their dogs. He carried dog treats with him to give to the neighborhood pets, especially one down the street that would come running to the fence for a treat when he heard the Gator. Church has always been an important part of his life, and he was a gifted public speaker and teacher. Most recently he has taught classes at First Baptist Alpharetta and at Crabapple Baptist, but he recently moved his membership to First Redeemer Church and was planning to teach there in the Fall.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Freeda Bush; children, Dr. Joseph Bush and his wife, Heidi Woloszczak, Deborah Rowland and her husband, Jared Rowland, and several nieces and nephews. His parents, Hubert and Meredith Bush of Kennesaw, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Saturday Jan. 15 ay 10 AM in the chapel of Georgia Memorial Park Funeral Home with Pastor David Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends between the hours of 6 until 8 PM Friday at the funeral home.
